The Piedra Del Peñol, also commonly known as 'El Peñón de Guatapé,' is an imposing inselberg situated in the town as well as the municipality of Guatapé, Antioquia, Colombia.

This granite boulder is known for its high resistance to weathering and erosion as it rises up and awefully stands to approximately 656 feet.

It is a part of the Antioquia Batholith and it is estimated to be about 65 million years old.

The rock is of great spiritual importance and it was revered by the Tahamí natives, who referred to it as mojarrá or mujará meaning 'rock'  or 'stone'.

The first official ascent was made on July 16, 1954 by Luis Eduardo Villegas López, Pedro Nel Ramírez and Ramón Díaz who needed five days to climb the wall by sheer strength with ropes attached to sticks.

Today, visitors can access the rock via a staircase with 708 steps that was built into one side for which there is an entrance fee.

The summit has a three-story high viewing tower, a convenience store and seating area which let visitors view the surrounding area with a bird’s eye view.

The place is also a homage to Luis Eduardo Villagas Lopez, and there is a bronze statue right at the base rock to remember his first climb.

Piedra Del Peñol is not only a natural wonder but also a testimony to human curiosity and the desire to explore the unusual.
